Before you go
Check your rental terms. Visit TCI notes that off-road damage isn’t usually covered by car insurance and that renters are normally liable for damage on unpaved roads; many jeep companies discourage this trip altogether.
The way in
Take Millennium Highway about three miles from town and turn left onto Tom Lightbourne Road. Roughly the first mile is paved; after that it’s rough in places all the way to the bluff, about 6.5 miles in all. Bring plenty of water.
What’s out there
Sea cliffs, about a mile of empty beach, and a small open-faced cave where Lucayan artefacts were found in 1912. Carved into the rock are inscriptions left by sailors, among them “Ship St. Louis Burnt At Sea 1842”. From the top you can see West Caicos. Ospreys, brown pelicans and white-tailed tropicbirds work the cliffs.
Staying safe
The rock is loose and sharp, with crevices and small holes hidden by plants, so stay on the footpaths and don’t climb the cliffs. Coral sumac and manchineel, both toxic, grow here. It’s isolated, Visit TCI reports a higher risk of crime, and help is far away: go with company, leave nothing in the car, and tell someone your plans.
Look after it
No carving or graffiti, no moving or stacking rocks, no fishing or collecting, and no driving on the beach or the salt flats.
