Getting onto the sand
The main public access is beside The Shore Club, a short golf cart ride from the gate, with smaller lane accesses further along the beach. The car park there fills up on windy days, which is one more reason the golf cart is the easy way down: towels, chairs and the cooler all fit.
The water
The water stays shallow and calm for a long way out. Most of it’s waist deep, and at low tide it gets shallower still.
The kites
The trade winds blow onshore here, usually from the southeast, and that’s what draws kiteboarders. On a windy afternoon the kites are out in numbers, and schools work right on the beach.
When to go
Mornings are calmer, the best time to wade a long way out or walk the shore. The wind builds through the day, and the kites follow.
Good to know
There are no lifeguards, so keep children close.
Long Bay Beach: common questions
Is Long Bay good for swimming?
It’s better for wading and floating than for swimming laps. On windy days, swim where the kiters aren’t: they move fast.
Is Long Bay good for learning to kiteboard?
Yes. Visit TCI calls it hard to beat as a beginner spot anywhere in the Caribbean, thanks to the flat, shallow water.
When is the best wind at Long Bay?
Visit TCI reports November through May as the most reliable stretch, typically 15 to 20 knots. Lessons need at least about 12 knots.
Does Long Bay get seaweed?
Sargassum arrives more often in summer on the south-facing beaches, Long Bay included. It’s largely absent in the winter months.
What’s the shipwreck off Long Bay?
La Famille Express, a freighter that ran aground in 2004 during Hurricane Frances. It sits a little over two miles offshore; boat and jet ski tours go out to it.
