Finding it

From Leeward Highway, take Long Bay Highway for about 0.9 miles, turn right onto Sea Sage Hill Road and go about half a mile. The Hole is on the left, marked by a small sign on a telephone pole, with a little paved parking area and space along the road.

What you’re looking at

Rainwater, slightly acidic, slowly dissolved the soft limestone here until what was probably a cave lost its roof. The water at the bottom is brackish and rises and falls a little with the tide, which suggests an underground link to the sea.

Look, don’t climb

There are no paths and no railings, and the rock at the edge is weak. Don’t climb down: you may not be able to get back out.

Making it part of a day

Most visits take ten minutes. It pairs well with an afternoon at Long Bay, a few minutes away, or as a stop on the way across the island.

The Hole: common questions
