Visiting

The entrance is signposted off Leeward Highway, opposite Royal Jewels and the Hilly Ewing Building. Go early, while it’s cooler.

The story

Thomas Stubbs, a Loyalist who left America after the Revolution, settled on what was then called Blue Caicos in the late 1700s and named his estate after his home county in England. Worked by hundreds of enslaved people, it ran as a plantation until the early 1800s. Poor harvests followed, and in 1810 he sold it to his brother Wade.

What you’ll see

Stone-lined paths lead past around fifteen points of interest: the great house, outbuildings and walls, built of local cut limestone with mortar made from burnt conch shell. Look for a ship carved into a rear wall of the main house. Hurricane Irma badly damaged the great house in 2017.

Good to know

The paths are uneven and may not suit wheelchairs or pushchairs. There’s a small gift shop. Allow about an hour in all.
